KPA released a new online industry and function specific Department of Transportation (DOT) Hazardous

Materials training (hazmat training) course as part of its Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS)

program for dealerships.

DOT 49 CFR, Part 172, Subpart H, requires that all hazmat employees who affect hazardous materials transportation are trained within 90 days of hire, with recurring training required at least once every three years. With fines up to $50,000, Hazmat enforcement can be tough and necessary training should be scheduled accordingly.

DOT regulations require that employees are presented with 3 modules: General Awareness Training, Security Training, and Function-Specific Training. KPA’s new DOT Hazmat training stands out on the latter, the function-specific training.

“This function specific training will allow Hazmat Employees to complete only the training they need. They no longer need to take lectures unrelated to their job functions, thus saving valuable time and getting them back to work sooner,” explain Peter Zaidel, product manager at KPA. “Examples of function specific training include air shipments, working with hazardous waste shipments, documentation and filling out shipping papers, packaging, marking and labeling hazardous materials, loading, unloading, blocking, bracing, segregation, driving, and incident reporting for a parts vehicle.”

At the request of KPA’s clients, the new online training was made industry specific by closely matching examples and interactive exercises with the tasks employees may have to perform as part of their job duties. These exercises will allow employees to practice what they’ve learned in a virtual environment and ensure they are able to perform Hazmat tasks like packaging, filling out shipping papers, and shipping by air hazardous materials like airbags, seat belt pretensioners and other products. Finally, the course gives access to resources and shortcuts that will help hazmat employees perform their functions more easily including online access to hazmat shipping guides, and links to DOT resources.

A free recorded webinar on DOT Hazardous Materials shipping presented by Peter Zaidel is available on the KPA website.  The webinar is part of KPA’s EHS and HR monthly compliance webinar series.  To register for any of KPA’s webinars go to http://www.kpaonline.com/webinars.
