Bill Would Allow Md. Dealers to Tell Buyers About Car Defects

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Maryland dealer Jack Fitzgerald asked a state Senate panel Tuesday to pass a bill that would grant dealers the right to tell customers about potential vehicle safety problems. The president of Fitzgerald Automalls said manufacturers often forbid dealers from talking about safety concerns until an official recall is issued, the Baltimore Sun reports.

The proposed legislation, sponsored by Democrat Senator Susan C. Lee, would improve transparency and prevent OEMs from retaliating against dealers who speak about potential vehicle defects. But the Maryland Automobile Dealers Association does not support the bill, in part because it is too broadly written. A vote on the bill has not yet been scheduled by the Senate Judicial Proceeding Committee.
