ATLANTA — Car buyers shopping for quality pre-owned units this spring have lighter tax refund checks in their pockets thanks to new IRS rules that took effect last year. Hoping to share recommendations for quality used cars available for $3,140 (the current average), Autotrader’s Chris O’Neill did some research and came up with a surprisingly long list.

“Depending on the vehicle you choose and on your individual situation, you may have to kick in a few hundred dollars, but you'll still be able to get a running car in reasonably good shape,” O’Neill wrote.

Autotrader’s list of the top 20 tax refund vehicles for 2019 includes:

  1. Ford Taurus (early to mid-2000s)

  2. Ford Explorer (mid-1990s to mid-2000s)
