Tesla will give competitors access to much of its U.S. electric-vehicle charging network in a federal effort to expand electrification in order to reduce carbon emissions.

It’s the largest EV charging network in the country, and the EV market leader could compromise its advantage by letting all EV owners use it, though it could help it build revenue, analysts said.

The Biden administration, which announced the program, said Tesla will allow non-Tesla customers to use 3,500 of its new and existing fast “super-chargers,” plus 4,000 slower stations, by the end of 2024.

Drivers will be able to use the network via the Tesla cellphone application or website, though an adapter or new charger design may be needed, one analyst said.

The deal is part of a larger $7.5 billion federal program to electrify U.S. roads.

EV charging “will be as easy as filling up at a gas station,” said White House aide Mitch Landrieu.
