Nissan is recalling over 236,000 Sentra compact cars made between 2020 and 2022 in the U.S. because of the risk of tie rods in the front suspension bending and breaking, which could lead to a loss of steering control.

Tie rods move wheels for steering in vehicles. When these components are bent, they can break and affect the driver’s ability to steer the vehicle, Nissan reported.

Owners are encouraged to contact their dealer if they experience vibration or an off-center steering wheel. Initially, dealers will check and change tie rods that are bent or broken. Nissan announced that dealers will replace the left and right tie rods for free at a later date when a new tie rod design is available.

Notifications will be sent by mail to owners beginning Oct. 5. A second letter will be sent out as soon as the parts are available.

In 2021, a recall was issued for several vehicles to address the same problem, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration documents. New tie rods will be necessary for cars that were repaired during the previous recall.
