Ford recalled about 30,000 electric pickups due to potential loss of steering control.

The Detroit-area automaker estimates just 1% of the 2024 and 2025 F-150 Lightnings have the flaw.

A ball joint nut in the knuckle assembly may have been insufficiently tightened during production of some of the trucks, according to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The flaw could cause separation of the front upper control arm from the assembly, leading to partial loss of steering control.

Vehicle vibration and/or a clunking or rattling noise as the truck suspension bounces are potential warning signs of the problem.

Ford first learned of the problem in March when a driver experienced right front wheel failure. A recall late last year hinged on the same problem, but an assembly plant remedy to verify nut tightening may not have been completely thorough, recall documents say. The new recall seeks to address all vehicles made before Ford introduced an improved tooling design.

Dealers will inspect the nut and replace the nut and/or knuckle assembly as needed. Ford is scheduled to mail recall notices to owners on June 9.
