Kentucky passed a state law similar to a recently enacted Florida statute, prohibiting requirements that insured consumers use a particular auto glass repair shop, as well as deceptive repair practices.

The law, sponsored by state Sen. Brandon Storm, imposes stricter regulation of auto glass repair shop trade practices.

“The measure would also impose stiff new penalties and fines for violations of the law and repair shops found guilty of engaging in fraudulent activities would face license revocation, and possible criminal charges,” Storm said in a statement on the website of the National Insurance Crime Bureau, which said it collaborated on the measure.

NICB said the law requires repair shops to give customers clear, detailed repair estimates and get written consent before doing repairs. It also makes a way for consumers to report suspected fraud and increases consumer education about such repair services.

“This law will help weed out unscrupulous operators who engage in fraudulent practices, such as overcharging, unnecessary repairs, and using substandard materials,” said NICB Senior Director of Government Affairs.
