General Motors and Honda announced recalls of hundreds of thousands of vehicles each for different reasons.

GM is recalling more than 323,000 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks of the 2020 to 2024 model years over a tailgate release issue.

The trucks’ electronic tailgate release could short-circuit when it gets wet, leading to the tailgate unlatching while the truck is in park. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said that the tailgate could then open on the road, leading to loose cargo causing a road hazard. It advises owners to check that the tailgate is latched before driving.

The company will replace the trucks’ exterior touchpad switch assemblies free of charge.

Meanwhile, Honda recalled more than 750,000 vehicles over an air bag issue.

The recall affects:

  • 2020 to 2022 Pilots, Accords, Civic sedans, HR-Vs and Odysseys

  • 2020 Civic coupes and Fits

  • 2021 to 2022 Civic hatchbacks

  • 2021 Civic Type Rs and Insights

  • 2020 to 2021 CR-V, CR-V Hybrids, Passports, Ridgelines and Accord Hybrids

  • 2020 and 2022 Acura MDXs

  • 2020 to 2022 Acura RDXs

  • 2020 to 2021 Acura TLXs

The vehicles’ front passenger seat weight sensor can crack and short-circuit, resulting in a failure to suppress the air bag, the NHTSA indicates. It points out that an unintentional airbag deployment in a crash can increase injury risk.

Honda will replace the sensors at no charge.

Both automakers are scheduled to send owners recall notices on March 18.
