November SAAR Reaches 16.41 Million Units

According to Autodata Corp., total light vehicle sales increased 8.9 percent form a year ago, while the SAAR reached its highest point this year.

WOODCLIFF LAKE, N.J. — Total light vehicle sales for November increased 8.9 percent from a year ago to 1.25 million units, according to Autodata Corp. On a year-to-date basis, total sales rose 8.4 percent to 14.2 million units.

The seasonally adjusted annual rate clocked in at 16.41 million units, the highest reading this year and up from 15.22 million in October. The following is a breakdown of sales performance by manufacturer.

BMW: The BMW Group realized its best November ever, retailing 36,388 units in November, a 0.3 percent increase from a year ago. On a year-to-date basis, sales were up 9.3 percent, with 332,205 units sold so far this year. BMW brand sales increased 1.7 percent vs. a year ago, with 31,752 units retailed for the month.

Chrysler: The domestic OEM continued to outpace 2012 sales figures, with sales increasing 9.3 percent from a year ago to 142,275 units. This was the best November sales month for the OEM since 2007 and the 44th consecutive month the carmaker has realized year-over-year sales gains.

Ford: U.S. sales for the domestic automaker rose 7 percent from a year ago to 190,449 units, while total retail sales rose 9 percent to 147,021 units sold — marketing the best November performance since 2004. Year-to-date sales were also up, increasing 11.7 percent from a year ago to 2,268,644 units sold.

General Motors: November sales were robust for all of GM’s brands, increasing 14 percent from a year ago to 212,060 units sold. On a retail basis, sales rose 16 percent from a year ago to 142,275 units sold. The performance marked the highest November sales month in six years. Looking at retail sales on a year-to-date basis, sales were up 8.8 percent vs. one year ago. Truck and car sales both saw heavy increases this month, rising 17 and 12 percent, respectively.

Honda: The Japanese automaker posted a slight 0.1 percent decrease from November 2012, with 116,507 units sold. The Honda division sold 63,016 cars, down 4.4 percent from last year, while Acura’s sales totaled 14,559 units, up 34 percent from the same period last year. Top sellers included the Acura MDX, with sales increasing 80.8 percent from a year ago to 6,091 units sold, and the CR-V, which set a consecutive monthly record for November with sales rising 5.3 percent from a year ago to 23,509 units sold.

Hyundai: Sales for the Korean automaker totaled 56,055 units in November, a 4 percent increase from a year ago and a 2.2 percent increase on a year-to-date basis. The performance marked the best November in company history.

Mazda: The automaker reported a 4.3 percent decrease in sales vs. a year ago, with sales for November totaling 20,754 units. On a year-to-date basis, sales are up 4.5 percent on 260,982 units sold. The Mazda6 led the way with a 202 percent increase vs. November 2012, with sales totaling 3,641 units. The company also reported that its SKYACTIV technology accounted for 81 percent of its monthly sales.

Mitsubishi: The automaker realized a 69.9 percent increase from a year ago, with sales totaling 6,071 units. Mitsubishi also recorded a year-to-date increase of 4 percent from a year ago, with sales totaling 55,804 units. Performance in the market is the company’s best November since 2007.

Nissan: November sales for the Japanese automaker increased 10.7 percent from a year ago to 106,528 units sold. The automaker continues to beat its 2012 year-to-date figures, with 1.14 million units sold, a 9.2 percent increase. The company also reported that the Nissan LEAF set a November sales record with 2,003 units sold, an increase of 30 percent from the year-ago period.

Toyota: The Japanese automaker sold 178,044 units, a 10.1 percent increase vs. a year ago. Toyota reported a 5.9 percent increase on a “daily sales rate” basis vs. the same period last year. The Toyota division sold 152,433 units for the month, up 9.7 percent from a year ago. Lexus sales rose 8.4 percent from a year ago to 25,611 units sold. Toyota also reported that luxury vehicle sales were up 35 percent over the Thanksgiving holiday.

Volkswagen: The German automaker recorded its second best November since 1973, with sales totaling 30,727 units. On a year-to-date basis, the OEM delivered 373,689 units, which officials said is on pace to match last year’s figures. Leading the way was the Passat, with 8,876 units delivered. Sales of the Jetta sedan totaled 10,828 units, while Tiguan sales total 2,235 units. The company also reported that its high-mileage, TDI clean diesel models account for 21 percent of sales in November and 24 percent of sales year to date.

The company also issued sales reports for its Porsche and Audi brands. The latter realized its fourth consecutive annual U.S. sales record a month early with a 13.3 percent year-to-date sales increase. Through the first 11 months of the year, Audi has sold 141,048 vehicles in the U.S. market, eclipsing the record the company set in 2012.

Porsche also realized a record November with 3,966 units sold, an increase of 3 percent from a year ago. On a year-to-date basis, sales increased 22 percent from a year ago to 39,077 units. In its 50th year, the 911 model line posted its best month ever with 1,368 units sold, up 79 percent from a year ago. Year-to-date sales on the 911 are also ahead of 2012 by 20 percent. The Cayenne model sales totaled 1,546 units, a 21 percent increase from a year ago.
