Safety regulators are reviewing completed recalls of a Volkswagen electric sports-utility vehicle after getting a dozen complaints of doors opening while they're operating on the road.

The 2021 to 2023 ID.4 models, recalled to fix door handles that didn’t meet manufacturer specifications to protect against water leaking inside them, which can cause handles to malfunction or a door to open, the National Highway Transportation Safety Board said.

Technicians inspected the door handles, replacing them as needed, and software was updated for door handle operation. VW conducted two recalls because it had used two separate door handle assembly suppliers.

Since the recalls, the agency received the complaints about doors on ID.4s intermittently opening while the vehicles were in operation and that the doors at times wouldn’t open for entering or exiting the vehicle. It seeks to determine the recalls’ effectiveness.
