Ford recalled more than 100,000 F-150 pickups due to potential for crashes.

The  2023 to 2025 trucks’ rear axle hub bolt can break, gradually wearing hub splines and causing loss of torque transfer to the wheel end, according to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. 

The scenario can lead to a rollaway when in park without the parking brake engaged or loss of drive power.

Ford estimates 1% of the vehicle population has the flaw. The F-150s in question have a Trailer Tow Max Duty package and a 9.75-inch heavy-duty axle with a 3/4 float axle design.

Warning signs for drivers include a clicking noise, and a rattling noise if the bolt breaks.

Ford said it’s aware of nearly 200 warranty claims related to the issue but no crashes or injuries.

Some of the recalled 2023 trucks were the subject of an earlier recall to address a rear axle stripped hub spline issue.

Dealers will replace the left and right rear axle shaft assemblies. Ford is scheduled to mail recall notices to owners in phases starting on Aug. 18.
