Automotive recalls rose in the second quarter, though they’re down year-over-year in the first six months of 2025.

The quarterly increase isn’t surprising since a first-quarter dip in recalled vehicles was the steepest decline for any quarter in more than a decade, according to Sedgwick data.

There were 246 recalls, up 14% from the first quarter, and the volume of recalled units was up 97% to about 7.4 million, or an average recall size of about 30,000 units.

When considering the first six months of the year, recalls are down about 9% to 461 events. Unit volume is down 37% to a little more than 11 million units, Sedgwick reported.

The company’s research shows electrical systems issues were again the leading cause of recalls in the quarter, tied to nearly 50 events. They were followed by equipment problems, at 29 recalls, and structure issues at 26 events.

When it came to sheer volume, back-over prevention systems led all other causes at 2.6 million affected units, including the one recall of the quarter affecting more than a million units. That was followed by structure issues and hydraulic service brakes.
