Backup cameras, beloved by drivers, are causing more headaches for automakers, Ford now recalling 1½ million vehicles over a flaw that’s led to 18 crashes and tens of thousands of warranty claims.

The unusually large recall stems from a supplier hardware issue that’s led to corrosion in cameras’ circuit boards, according to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The flaw can cause the cameras to display no image or distorted or inverted images, defeating their safety purpose during vehicle backing.

Ford just issued a similarly large recall in the spring over rearview cameras that affected some newer models.

Recalled this time are certain:

  • 2015 to 2019 Lincoln MKCs, Mustangs, F-350 SDs, F-250 SDs and F-450 SDs

  • 2015 to 2017 Lincoln Navigators and Expeditions

  • 2015 to 2018 Edges and Transit Connects

  • 2016 to 2019 F-550 SDs and Transits

  • 2017 to 2019 Econolines

  • 2019 Rangers

Ford dealers will inspect and replace the cameras if needed once the remedy is ready. The automaker is scheduled to mail safety notices to owners on Sept. 22, followed by recall notices when the remedy is in place.
