General Motors recalled nearly 63,000 Chevrolet Silverado pickups over a short-circuit risk, warning of the potential for fire when they’re parked.

It estimated just 1% of the vehicle population could have the underlying problem but nevertheless classified the recall as urgent due to the fire risk. It’s warning owners to park the vehicles outdoors and away from buildings until they’re repaired.

The recall affects certain 2019 to 2024 Medium Duty Silverados, except 2024 units made with a brake switch wire harness with a silicone sealant. The models include 4500HD, 5500HD and 6500HD.

If the condition develops, a “service brake system” warning light may illuminate.

The affected Silverados can develop a brake fluid leak into the assembly’s electrical components, potentially leading to a brake pressure switch and fuse short. A short can then produce excess heat and resulting fire, including when the engine is off, according to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The truck population was recalled earlier due to a separate root issue with the same result.

Dealers will replace the brake pressure switch wire harness.

General Motors is scheduled to mail recall notices to owners on July 28. It said one fire has been linked to the issue but that it was unaware of any related crashes or injuries.
