October’s 3.6% decline in wholesale prices for used vehicles eight years in age was in line with the NADA Used Car Guide’s forecasted range of 3.2% to 3.7%. However, the decline was slightly more than this October than the previous three-year average decline of 3.3% for the period.
As has been the case for much of the year, average wholesale used-car prices were down on a year-over-year basis. In October, the average wholesale used-vehicle price fell by 1.2% compared to the year before. Trucks, on the other hand, continued to realize year-over-year increases in wholesale prices. Compared to last year, truck prices are up 5.1%.
Volume weighted, overall car segment values decreased by 0.46% the week of Nov. 4, which was lower than the 0.7% depreciation rate recorded during the four weeks prior. For the truck segment, values decreased by 0.34%, slightly lower than the 0.58% rate recorded during the previous four weeks.
Both the car and truck segments experienced an overall reduction in depreciation during the week of Oct. 28, with car and truck wholesale values decreasing by 0.53% and 0.58%, respectively, vs. 0.76% and 0.80% the previous week..
ADESA's chief economist reported this week that the continued strength of the truck segment drove a year-over-year increase in wholesale prices, while weak car sales contributed to a month-over-month price decline.
For the second time this year, the seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) for new vehicles fell below 17 million in August. Manheim, however, said the drop 'may be a good thing."
Wholesale prices for vehicles up to eight years in age fell 2.3% in July, tying June for the biggest drop recorded so far this year, according to the NADA Used Car guide. As a result, the firm lowered its seasonally adjusted used vehicle price index 1.1% to 118.9 .
The average wholesale used price in July was $10,362, a 2% decline from June but a a 4.9% increase from a year ago, according to ADESA Analytical Services. The strength of truck prices carried the year-over-year gains.
June wholesale used-vehicle prices reached their highest level in four years, rising for the third consecutive month, according to Manheim.
Wholesale used-vehicle prices increased again in May, suggesting dealers have continued to achieve efficiency gains that allow them to bid-up auction prices even as gross margins narrow, according to Manheim’s Used Vehicle Value Index.
