Ford recalled more than 90,000 vehicles over an engine problem that presents a risk of crashes.

The issue centers on the engine intake valves, which a recall notice says could break while the vehicle is in motion, causing engine failure.

The Detroit-area automaker recalled certain 2021 and 2022 Ford Broncos, F-150s, Edges and Explorers and Lincoln Aviators and Nautiluses with 2.7-liter or 3.0-liter Nanco EcoBoost engines.

Ford indicates in a report on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website that there have so far been 22 instances of engine failure in the vehicles at issue after three months or less of use. Those vehicles’ engine intake valves broke and dropped into the combustion chamber, damaging the engine. It determined that the valves were brittle due to a supplier specification issue that was addressed in the fall of 2021.

The automaker said it’s unaware of any accidents or injuries related to the problem.

Ford dealers will test the vehicles’ engine cycles to determine if the engines need to be replaced. It’s scheduled to mail recall notices to owners on Oct. 7.
