CX-90 passed all the tests IIHS threw at it to get the nonprofit's highest safety rating.

A Mazda SUV got a top nod for safety. The plug-in hybrid CX-90 won the Top Safety Pick + award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety after passing muster in crash tests.
The 2024 midsize SUV garnered good ratings in several front and side tests, including pedestrian front crash prevention. Its headlights were also rated “good” in all trim levels.
In a front crash test that separates top-rated vehicles from the next level down, the CX-90’s structure held up, with no elevated injury risk, IIHS said.
Meanwhile, a 2024 BMW SUV earned the second-highest IIHS safety rating after demonstrating “stellar” crashworthiness and crash avoidance.
The small X2 was awarded the Top Safety Pick rating after a vehicle redesign. It didn’t win the highest award because it hasn’t been tested under an updated “moderate overlap” evaluation that includes a second dummy in the rear seat.
