SUVs Pass Crash Tests With Flying Colors
Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gives the midsize models its highest safety rating.

The NX received an “acceptable” rating because of increased risk of abdominal injury in the rear seats but otherwise performed well to gain the top award.

A trio of midsize SUVs from three different makers passed crash tests to earn a top safety award.
The 2025 BMW X5 and 2024 Lexus NX and Volvo XC90 received the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety’s highest honor, the Top Safety Pick+.
To achieve the top rating the models all passed the nonprofit group’s testing focused on back seat protection that it updated in 2022.
The X5 and XC90 had “good” ratings in the test, and the NX received an “acceptable” rating because of increased risk of abdominal injury in the rear seats.
“All three SUVs provide excellent protection for the driver but vary somewhat in terms of back seat passenger protection,” the institute said in a press release on the ratings.
The models all passed front crash prevention evaluations and have “good” or “acceptable” headlights.
